The Power Workers’ U n ion i s the union of choice for the vast majority of workers in Ontario’s Power Production.
Membership of the PWU averaged 15,000 in 2002. Our members work throughout Ontario and make up a large majority of the employees at Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, TransAlta in Ottawa, Northwind Power, Mississagi Power, Hydro One and affiliate companies, the Electrical Safety Authority as well as the Independent Market Operator. The union also represents workers at local distribution companies throughout the province, as well as local cable and telephone companies, the County of Brant, Kinectrics, New Horizon System Solutions, Inergi, operators at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. as well as casual employees through PWU hiring hall agreements.
The Power Workers now have over 40 Collective Agreements where less than ten short years ago we had only one. The union is led by a President and 3 Vice Presidents who are elected for four-year terms. These officers support and direct an extensive network of stewards throughout the province. In fact, the PWU has one of the highest proportion of stewards to members of any union in Canada – nearly one member in nine is a front-line representative, which accounts for the exceptional degree of solidarity displayed by PWU membership in recent years. The PWU owns its own headquarters in Toronto and maintains a professional support staff of 31.
“On behalf of the 17,000 Power Workers’ Union members that keep the lights on across Ontario I would like to thank the organizers of the Muskoka Charity Motorcycle Ride and the Canadian Diabetes Association for their hard work in support of the Canadian people. We are proud to be a sponsor. “ Don MacKinnon, President, Power Workers’ Union

Diabetes is in our family and motorcycling is in our blood, so the combination in this event is a natural link. We want everyone with a motorcycle to Ride & Have Fun, and most importantly be safe on the road”… Kate Insley – GENERAL MANAGER – Barrie Harley-Davidson®
